Enamel Patch Box. A small insight to the small enamel patch boxes and what they are used for, what materials they are made from and their decorations.

Enamel Patch Box, Opened patch box

Enamel Patch Boxes:
The boxes themselves can be anything from small hand held enamel boxes which are able to fit into a pocket, to a box that is highly decorated with enamel designs and is large enough to hold jewelry and similar items. The enamel patch boxes are created in the same way as other enamel product apart from the hinge that needs to be connected to the enamel patch box before any enameling begins.

Box creation:
The box is first made from a metal or alloy, the metal is shaped if it needs to be a certain shape before the enamel is applied, it is then fitted with a hinge. The enameling can consist of coating the entire enamel patch box with the same enamel or the box can be decorated with a design or picture of something. The boxes are sometimes decorated with gold or silver to add a more "luxurious" appearance to them.

The enamel is then highly polished to give off a glossy finish. The gold or silver is also polished and any small accessories are added such as mirrors or small locking clips.

Enamel Snuff Boxes:
Enamel snuff boxes are similar to enamel patch boxes but are said to be a little smaller, these boxes can have enamel designs also. Many people claim that snuff boxes are used for holding and containing tobacco for pipes.

Enamel patch boxes decoration:
The decoration on the patch boxes can apparently be very minimal to very large and of a very high quality, the box can be coated in enamel and finished or can have a design of a picture or scene from a location. Many people say the gold and silver plating gives the boxes a very elegant finish.
