Cloisonne, Cloisonne vase

Creating the Cloisonne effect:
Enamelling on metalwork was said to be originally practised in Japan from around the 16th century. Many of the early pieces were small door handles or areas of inlay in sword fittings. The basic technique involved creating a design on a base object, frequently copper, upon which thin metal wires (of copper, silver or gold) were fixed over the lines of the design to create cells known as cloisons.

These cloisons were then filled with coloured enamel which was fired to fuse the enamel to the metal. After firing the surface was then ground and polished to produce a smooth finish. Additional effects could be created by adding metal particles into the enamel mix and these would have sparkled after the final polish.

Various Cloisonne items:
The most common item that takes on this art form is said to be the vase, many artists claim there are an endless amount of cloisonne designs and patterns that can be fused and decorated onto an object. Some of the other objects that are decorated in this style are said to be things like cremation urs to small beads.

Many people who have seen cloisonne being done claim it takes alot of effort and time to create such a beautiful object. Usually the finished product gets highly polished and plated with gold or silver which is said to add the extra touch of quality.

Cloisonne with precious stones:
Precious stones are not usually in the traditional and past-time designs of any object decorated with cloisonne, the shine of the pattern is usually created by a high amount off polishing and possibly adding metal into the enamel.
